Roads Policing Offences by Region and Division

Publication of Figures Relating to Roads Policing Offences/Activity

As part of planned proactive publication releases, the Garda Síochána Analysis Service (GSAS), in conjunction with the office of Assistant Commissioner for Roads Policing and Community Engagement (RPCE), has developed these tables of figures relating to roads policing offences/activity.

Figures are provided for the following:

  • Fixed Charge Notices (FCNs) for offences relating to Mobile Phones; Safety Belts; Speeding Overall as well as broken down into Intercept (Garda issued) and Non-Intercept (Speed Camera Van Operator); Learner Drivers Unaccompanied; and Learner Drivers Non-Display of L Plate.
  • Vehicles detained under Section 41 of the Roads Traffic Act overall and broken down by those where the seizure related to an Unaccompanied Learner Driver and relating to a Driver without Insurance (there may be more than one reason for a seizure).
  • Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) Checkpoints conducted as well as the number of breath tests (alcohol) and oral fluid tests (drugs) conducted at MIT Checkpoints.
  • The number of Summonses and Charges issued for the Owner or User of a Vehicle having No Insurance.

Figures for summonses and charges issued are based on the creation/charge date.  All other figures are presented based on the date the incident occurred/the enforcement activity was undertaken.  Each table contains a note to clarify the details of what is included; some tables are a sub-set of other figures.  Monthly and quarterly totals are provided for a rolling 15 month period (five quarters) in each release.  This is so that the equivalent period in the previous year is shown alongside the most recent trends.  These Roads Policing statistics are provided at a national, regional and divisional level.

Many factors may contribute to variations in the trends including overall traffic volumes in a given area, road user compliance levels, Roads Policing personnel figures, enforcement levels, the weather and particular Garda operations.  One or more of these factors may influence any trends in the statistics.

Future quarterly releases will be uploaded here approximately six weeks after the end of each quarter.  Figures for the calendar years 2019, 2020 and 2021 will also be made available.  A new thematic report exploring trends in fatal and serious injury traffic collisions will be developed and made available in 2024.  We receive a very high volume of requests for data relating to Roads Policing, where the figures are contained within the proactive releases, we will direct requesters to the relevant section on the website.
